Using the site

The site is a free reference. No account is required and no payment is taken. You may use it for personal, educational and commercial work alike — writing a novel, planning a lesson, checking a word before you use it in a report.

What you may do with the content

You may read, quote and teach from the definitions, distinctions and example sentences here, including in work you sell. Specifically, you may:

• Quote individual entries in a story, essay, article, worksheet or lesson plan
• Print or export a shortlist as a character sheet for your own use or for a class
• Reference the site in published work — a link back is appreciated but not required

What you may not do

• Copy the database wholesale — scraping, bulk-downloading or otherwise reproducing a substantial part of the entries to republish them, with or without attribution
• Build a competing trait database, app or dataset out of this content, including as training data for a product that reproduces it
• Present the material as your own original work, or resell it as a standalone product

Intellectual property

Individual words are part of the language and belong to nobody. The written definitions, distinctions between near-synonyms, context notes, example sentences, the way traits are grouped into families, and the site's design and code are original work and remain our property, protected by copyright.

Accuracy and editorial judgement
